Regill Derenge is a companion in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.

How to Recruit

Regill can be recruited at different points in the game. The first opportunity comes at the end of By Hell's Ordinance. The second opportunity is near the end of A Strike from the Sky. While the first opportunity can be missed, the second one will always be available in the course of completing the main questline. See the interactions section below for exact details.

Biography

Regill Derenge is a Hellknight, and a Paralictor of the Order of the Godclaw. A ruthless pragmatist who lives his life strictly in accord with the doctrine of The Measure and the Chain, he endeavors to take the most logical, lawful actions. Although many onlookers judge him as being overly strict and harsh, Regill does not care about the opinions of others.

A gnome who is experiencing the effects of bleaching, Regill has made peace with his fate. While other gnomes seek to extend their lives through excitement, he believes that such thrill-seeking behavior only brings chaos to the world.

Regill has not made any personal attachments in order to be a more effective commander and fighter. He believes that it is better to be respected than to be liked, as friendships only make one vulnerable to betrayal. When Regill was an Armiger, he had a mentor who trained him to become a Hellknight. When he learned that she had betrayed the order and was making plans to escape, he chose to kill her before the plot was made known so that the recruits would not lose respect and confidence in their leaders.

Regill came to the Worldwound because he believes that Queen Galfrey's leadership has been incompetent, and that he and the Hellknights will be more successful in the fight against the demons.

Journal

Black Steel

The whitish locks of hair on his head mark the time until his inevitable death. Yet, his own fate doesn't seem to worry Regill Derenge, a Hellknight to his very core. For those who hone themselves into living weapons, there is no greater purpose than to strike. However, only time will tell where this strike will land.

Watch Your Step

Trust — does Regill Derenge understand the concept? Apparently not, for he did not hesitate to arrange a test for the Commander, a challenge designed to identify his/her weaknesses and traitorous ambitions. Only one thing is clear — Regill will not serve anyone out of a sense of loyalty or friendship, but out of respect? Yes. However, respect must be earned.

The Final Verdict

Regill Derenge is as straightforward as they come, but predictable? Never. It turns out that he has hatched a plan to bring the Commander and the Hellknights together. And to execute this plan, Regill sacrificed his own rank and reputation without a second thought.

Interactions

Act 2

By Hell's Ordinance

Regill can be found at Reliable Redoubt preparing for an imminent gargoyle attack. After a display of ruthless practicality where he killed his own wounded soldiers to make for an easier retreat, the Knight Commander fights their way to a cave where Regill has chosen to make a stand against the gargoyles.

The player may question him here about his methods. Regill justifies himself that he didn't have time to save the wounded, and the gargoyles were trying to capture prisoners. After fighting off a massive gargoyle attack in the cave, the player can continue to question Regill.

You can request to be formally appointed a Hellknight. If you have any levels in the Hellknight or Hellknight Signifer class, Regill says he will file the request for you. Otherwise, he indicates that you must first meet the requirements (having a level in either of those classes).

If your character has a problem with Regill's decision to kill his wounded soldiers, they may press him on this. He reiterates that death is preferable to captivity. You may state your opinion or even attack and kill Regill here. If you kill him, the Hellknights will not join the crusade.

After this comes the discussion regarding Yaker. Regill doubles his pay for getting help but orders 100 lashes for abandoning his unit. You may gain Yaker's favor by using the chaotic dialogue option.

Next, the discussion moves to what to do with the knights from the Order of the Sunrise Sword. You may take them into your army or let them join the Hellknights. The good option will cause them to join you, creating an army with 5 clerics nearby.

Finally, the conversation proceeds to whether the Hellknights will assist your crusade. If you ally with the hellknights, you will gain Regill as a companion and hellknight crusade units will be added to the pool of possible mercenaries for hire.

Additionally, if you allowed Regill to take command of the remaining crusaders, an army containing 10 hellknights is created nearby. However, if you invited the crusaders into your army earlier, there will only be 7 hellknights. If you decline to ally with them, you gain nothing here.

A Strike from the Sky

If you did not go to the Reliable Redoubt before going to the Lost Chapel to save your allies, you will meet Regill there in the area with Irabeth. Regill does not harbor any ill feelings toward you, as he believes coming to rescue the hellknights would have been a poor tactical decision.

They have both been infected with ghoul fever and are impaled on hooks that hang from the ceiling. In the conversation, you learn that Irabeth used the last of her power to heal some of Regill's wounds.

Though he suspects that many of his forces were killed, he now offers an alliance between his forces and the crusade, and to join your party. If you accept, he will be in your camp after you are done at the Lost Chapel. Also, Hellknights will join the pool of possible mercenary units. If you decline the alliance, you will gain nothing and Regill will leave.

At Camp

Back at camp, Regill will tell you that he received a portion of mythic power last night as a result of joining your party. When questioned on why he chose to join forces with you, he explains that it was the logical thing to do due to your proven success against the demons thus far.

When asked about his plans for the war, he explains that he is primarily focus on logistical matters at the moment. He will establish a Hellknight outpost, gather forces and intel, and make a plan of attack afterward.

You may also question him about why he came to Mendev, his opinons about Galfrey and the crusade leadership, the bleaching, and his personal life. He can also answer some basic questions about Hellknight recruitment, leadership, and philosophy,

Act 3

During act 3 you will be invited to visit the Hellknights Outpost. This begins the quest Watch Your Step. Depending on your choices during this quest, Regill's attitude toward your leadership will be affected and this will have consequences for his act 5 quest. See the quest page for a detailed walkthrough.

Act 5

You will once again be invited to visit the Hellknights Outpost. This begins the quest The Final Verdict. Upon arrival, Regill will begin a tribunal where you are essentially put on trial to determine your trustworthiness according to the Hellknights. Depending on the choices you have made during your adventure so far, you will get points that are tracked by the TribunalFlag. See the quest page for a detailed walkthrough.

If you have 3 or more points on the TribunalFlag, or if you choose to fight, you will fight and kill the entire Hellknight host that is present. If you have 2 or less points on the TribunalFlag, you can resolve the situation peacefully with the Hellknights. However, you can still choose to banish, kill, or continue with Regill in your party during the conversation that happens immediately after the tribunal.

  3. Didn't ascend with companions
  4. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
Regill Derenge wrote a treatise on waging war against the demons — both a practical manual and a philosophical exhortation. And once that was done, he succumbed to the Bleaching completely. He was posthumously reinstated in his order and buried with honors in the officers' cemetery. His treatise was used in all future wars against the Abyss by mortals, angels, and devils alike.
You are on the Devil Mythic Path
Some say that the part about devils was no coincidence and that the knight's service continued even after his death, since one of the devils closest to the Commander was the spitting image of Regill.

  1. You aren't on the Devil Mythic Path
  2. You survived Threshold
Before he died, he managed to send a letter to the Commander. Did it contain sincere farewells or a list of directives? Impossible to say. No one was privy to the contents except the recipient.

  3. Didn't ascend with companions
  4. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
The Fifth Crusade had concluded, but the former paralictor Regill Derenge was plagued by doubts — had his every step been truly faultless? He returned to Cheliax and spent much time pensively wandering the cemetery where the members of his order were usually buried. And it was there that his Bleaching-stricken body was eventually discovered.

Yaker's Tribute

  1. Yaker became a commander
  2. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
Yaker Ankelle did not forget his former superior and mentor. Thanks to the Commander, he came to lead his own chapter, naming it Derenge's Lions. The chapter was hailed as one of the most efficient detachments of the Godclaw.

Trickster Ending
You are on the Trickster Mythic Path
There was one person who took particular offense at the Commander's final joke. Regill Derenge had not the slightest inkling that he would become an unwitting accomplice to turning the lands of the former Wound into an insane crossroads of worlds. The shock was so strong that it reversed Regill's Bleaching by at least a hundred years. The gnome vowed to devote his life to rectifying the chaos caused by the Commander.

  1. Didn't ascend with companions
  2. Greybor is still a lone traveling assassin
  3. You are on the Trickster Mythic Path
Once he was done serving the Commander, Greybor returned to his travels. His career flourished, and every contract he fulfilled was worthy of a thrilling tale. The dwarf's road took him to many lands and came to an end on a crudely constructed scaffold, where Greybor met his death, puffing nonchalantly on his trusty pipe. Greybor's sentence was carried out by none other than Regill Derenge.

Regill Ignored

  1. Didn't complete The Final Verdict
  2. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
Paralictor Regill Derenge was not entirely satisfied with his actions over the course of the Fifth Crusade and was rumored to be considering retirement. But even without the Worldwound, the world would always have an excess of chaos requiring harsh, decisive intervention. This dissatisfaction with himself may have served as a potent enough emotion to stave off his death from the Bleaching for years. Either that, or Regill simply ordered himself to hold on — and he did.

Ascension

  1. Completed The Final Verdict
  2. Ascended with companions
  3. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
Acquiring incredible power did not change Regill Derenge in any way. He had already been working to a five-hundred-year plan for the fight against chaos and smoothly switched to devising a plan to "definitively solve the problem of the Abyss." Even devils respected his assiduousness. Regill, in turn, found the discipline in the ranks of Hell to be somewhat lacking.

  1. Didn't complete The Final Verdict
  2. Ascended with companions
  3. You aren't on the Trickster Mythic Path
Regill was not tempted by power and eternal life. After the battle of Threshold, he left the Commander's side.
Aeon Ending
As an Aeon, travel to the past and prevent the Worldwound crisis from happening
In a world without a Worldwound, the Order of the Godclaw was never founded, but Regill Derenge nevertheless reached the highest ranks of the Hellknights. He dedicated his life to the struggle against chaos and evil.
Decided to let your companions keep their memories of the original timeline
The Hellknight resisted the effects of the Bleaching incredibly well. When asked what it was that allowed him to live for so long, he replied cryptically, "The Commander has not released me from my service or given me the order to die."
