Build Points is a currency in Pathfinder: Kingmaker.
Build points are the kingdom's main resource. They are required for settlement upgrades, building construction, kingdom projects, and certain throne room event resolutions. They are commonly referred to as BP. Unless otherwise noted, BP is earned on a weekly basis. Until your barony becomes a kingdom at the conclusion of Coronation, you will pay a 50% tax to Brevoy on your weekly income (not including the Brevoy subsidy).
Sources of Income
- Brevoy subsidy. This is 30 BP of tax-free income that you will receive from the beginning of your barony until you can declare independence.
- Kingdom stat ranks. Each rank increases income by 1, including the first stat rank you start with. This income cannot exceed your economy stat rank (so rank 3 community will only provide 2 BP if your economy is still on rank 2).
- Region income. This is unlocked after the Economy VI rank up event. Depending on the level of taxation you decide, you can earn direct income from each region in your territory. Upgraded regions will provide more.
- Kingdom buildings. A few buildings, such as the Tannery, can provide weekly BP income.
- Kingdom projects. There are many projects that can provide income, most notably trade agreements with various nations and political factions.
- Throne room events. Some decisions you make in your throne room can provide either weekly income or a one-time payment.
- Region upgrades. Some region upgrades directly increase your income, or indirectly increase income in combination with certain projects.
- Successfully resolving problem and opportunity events. In many cases these need to be solved with a specific type of advisor to get the BP reward.
- You may directly purchase BP with your own funds at a rate of 80 coins per BP from Hassuf in Tuskdale or by pressing the purchase BP button located in the stats window of kingdom management.
Strategy
- Beware a negative balance of BP. Passing time while your BP is negative will rapidly increase unrest, causing penalties to your dice rolls for resolving opportunity and problem events. If your unrest reaches -5, your game will fail. Some decisions you can make in throne room events and even story events outside of your control will allow you to reach a negative BP balance. With this in mind, keeping some extra BP may prevent disaster. If your BP becomes negative but no time has passed yet, you can purchase BP with your own funds to prevent unrest.
- Consider how long it will take to see a return on your investment. For example, some projects to increase your weekly income have a significant up front cost and may take many months or even years to pay you back and begin turning a profit.
- Avoid constructing buildings without a strategy. Buildings are costly, and many are not necessary to run a successful kingdom. Consider only constructing buildings to help you upgrade a stat if it is close to the upgrade threshold, or when it is time to upgrade a village to a town.
- In the beginning, you will need to finance projects and construction by directly purchasing BP with your own funds. Since artisans regularly provide you with expensive gifts, they may indirectly become the primary source of income for your kingdom. As such, it would be wise to prioritize constructing their workshops to start getting gifts earlier, and complete their quests to earn better gifts.
